PHYSICAL EDUCATION

Physical Education

Our Lady of Peace Catholic School believes that physical education is for all students, regardless of ability or size.

Every student has equal opportunities to participate in activities, acquire knowledge and develop values that promote a health enhancing level of fitness as well as lifelong wellness.

All students are provided with a wide range of activities that develop skills in the areas of movement, fitness and sports.

While participating in these activities, students gain an understanding of principles and strategies they can apply to movement and exercise throughout their lives.

Through these intentional experiences, students expand their understanding of personal responsibility, concepts of cooperation and fair play.

Our Lady of Peace uses guidelines adapted from the National Association for Sport and Physical Education to guide the physical education curriculum.

BEST PRACTICE IN TEACHING PHYSICAL EDUCATION

The teacher who teaches physical education strives to increase the use of best practice through:

  • Sequential instruction based on student needs and developmental level
  • Varied opportunities for students to build competence and confidence in their ability to perform a variety of motor skills
  • Activities meant to enhance the psychomotor, cognitive and affective development of all children
  •  Cooperative and competitive learning environments
  • Instructional strategies for the inclusion of all students regardless of skill or fitness levels, gender, race or ethnic group
  • Activities designed to help them understand the concepts of health-related life-long skills
  • Adequate space, time and equipment for maximizing participation
  • Adequate space for movement learning, space to move freely and safely and acoustics that allow students to clearly hear instruction.
  • Assessment, both formal and informal, to provide feedback and improve instruction and learning
